Elvis Costello will revisit his 1977 debut, My Aim Is True, with an expansive five-CD 49th-anniversary edition arriving October 2 through UMe.
The collection contains 104 tracks, including 52 previously unreleased songs, demos, outtakes and live performances. The original 12-track album has also been newly remastered from the Pathway Studios analog master reels.
Costello chose the unconventional 49-year milestone rather than waiting for the album’s 50th anniversary. The project follows his transformation from Declan MacManus into Elvis Costello and the rapid development of the songs that launched his recording career.
Five discs tracing an early catalog
Disc one presents the 2026 remaster of My Aim Is True, followed by the single version of “Watching the Detectives.” The remaining discs move through acoustic recordings, bedroom demos, studio outtakes, broadcasts and live performances.
The second disc, The Blue Print, focuses on material recorded before the debut album. The Stranger in the House follows Costello’s transition through 28 recordings, while Becoming the Attractions documents the songs as they developed in performance.
The fifth disc, Covered in Clover, captures a 2007 Great American Music Hall performance where Costello reunited with Clover, the band that played on much of the original album.
Archival writing and unseen material
The physical edition includes a 72-page essay by Costello, unseen photographs, handwritten lyrics and diary entries from 1976. Additional essays come from Nick Lowe, Rosanne Cash, Peter Wolf, Jim James and other contributors.
My Aim Is True introduced songs including “Alison,” “Less Than Zero,” “Mystery Dance,” “(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes” and “Waiting for the End of the World.” Its stripped-down production helped connect pub rock, punk and the emerging new-wave movement.
The five-CD edition is scheduled for release October 2.
