Fontaines D.C. debuted the new song “Happy, For You” during their headline set at Leeds Festival on August 29, giving fans the first live performance of another track from the band’s upcoming fifth album, “Dopamine Chamber.”
NME reported that the song appeared midway through the Leeds set and marked its first-ever public performance. The band had reportedly intended to play it at Reading Festival a night earlier, but technical and logistical problems shortened that headline set and pushed the debut to Leeds.
“Happy, For You” is part of “Dopamine Chamber,” due October 16 through XL Recordings. The band’s official site and XL’s release page both confirm the date, while the group’s Bandcamp page lists the project as an 11-track album produced by James Ford.
The new song joins “Marianne” among the material already connected publicly to the album. At Leeds, Fontaines D.C. also played “Six Shot Morning,” another new-era track that has appeared in recent live sets.
The Leeds performance matters because Fontaines D.C. are using the festival circuit to introduce the album in real time rather than keeping the campaign confined to studio singles. Their Reading and Leeds headline appearances were the first time the Dublin band had topped the bill at the twin festivals.
“Dopamine Chamber” follows 2024’s “Romance,” the album that pushed Fontaines D.C. into a much larger international audience. XL describes the new project as colder, stranger and more synthetic, with frontman Grian Chatten framing the album as a kind of mood-altering room the listener enters.
NME described “Happy, For You” as slow-burning and bittersweet, with Chatten writing from the perspective of someone trying to accept the end of a relationship. The emotional language is direct, but the surrounding album campaign places those feelings inside a more artificial and uneasy sonic environment.
The Leeds set also included established songs such as “Boys in the Better Land,” “Jackie Down the Line,” “Favourite,” “I Love You” and “Starburster,” creating a bridge between the band’s earlier guitar-driven work and the darker electronic direction teased for “Dopamine Chamber.”
A studio version of “Happy, For You” has not yet been officially released, so the Leeds performance remains the song’s first public introduction.
